The Marian Reforms of 107 BC allowed landless men to become soldiers and helped establish the empire's first standing army. Each maniple was commanded by a centurion, recognizable by his leg guards, the vine-stick and the helmet with a transverse crest. After the reforms, general issue equipment for the common soldier was supplied by the state and consisted of bronze or iron mail armour, a semi-rectangular shield, two throwing pila, a gladius (short sword) and pugio (short dagger). Includes parts for 35 plastic figures in various poses and one horse.
