A bit of history on the "Nasone" de Roma
Only four years have passed since the entrance to Italian troops that sanction the end of the temporal power of the Popes of Rome. The first Mayor of the Neo Capital of Italy, Count Luigi Pianciani finds a disastrous situation. Back after 70 years of exile and peregrinations, after making wars and fought against every foreigner on Italian soil. Colonel Garibaldino, in 1849 at the head of only 700 men blocks the Austrian troops to the Help of the Pope at the end of the Furlo. Now he has to fight to restore dignity to a population to the disagreement, who lives in dirt and without aid, subsidies or essential services. It must also fight against the Italian government which is aid to the capital and which is reflected in the different wills of the Minister of Finance Quintino Sella.
However, it manages to have the funds necessary to create medical principals, to build houses, roads and sidewalks, and also to create that water supply network expensive to the Roman people, by cast iron fountains. Together with the councilor Rinazzi designs a new way to make the Romans drink. No longer the usual fountains of stone, marble, pompous and uncomfortable, but trivial and functional cast iron columns that deliver fresh water to quench thirst and wash. The first twenty fountains have three dragon-shaped nozzles, then they are replaced by a single curved cinnamon that will sanction their definitive nickname: "Er Nasone".
110 cm high, heavy 100 kg, have a simple grille where it flows perennial flowing. What strange, the fountains are infuocated to the summer sun but the water remains cold because it flows continuously. Furthermore, a method is used that only the "local" know well to drink without breaking up and is above all hygienic. A simple hole placed above the cinnamon brings out a jet of water, tapping the general output. Over the centuries the "nasone" remains unchanged in form and materials. Only the historical appeals of the last war try to modify it, inserting the litigation bundle and the fascist year of the laying in some specimens. In others, the word "CONI" appears at the Foro Italico. Some report the word "water aqueduct". In the territory of the Municipality of Rome the "Nasoni" are around 2,500, of which 280 within the walls; To these additional 114 fountains that distribute water to Romans, tourists and animals in Rome for free.
To date only three specimens of the first version are visible in Rome. One is located in the Pantheon square, and unfortunately has the missing central torch. Another is at the foot of the Staircase of Via delle Tre Cannelle (the reference to another oldest fountain), a crossbar of Via IV Novembre. It is said that this is a copy redone in the most recent period. The third, not working is located in Via San Teodoro, at the foot of the Palatine.
